ALMEDINILLA, EXAMPLE OF CULTURAL HERITAGE THAT IS AN OPPORTUNITY OF LOCAL DEVELOPMENT
Actualizado: 17 sept 2019
Principal geography data:
Population: 2.523 Hb.
Surface: 55 Km²
Elevation: 622 mt a.s.l
The rich heritage of this small town consists of: Roman Village “El Ruedo”, Iberian Settlement “Cerro de la Cruz”, Historical-Archeological Museum, Ecomuseum Caicena River, Plaza de Toros, “Coliseum”, festivities, cultural events and ethnobotanic preservation.
I have decided to visit the archeologically rich town of Almedinilla (Córdoba), because is one of the towns of Córdoba that has received more awards for its touristic activities (Ex: Award for Best Innovative Tourism Product Cordoba for Ecomuseum, and Award for Best Innovative Tourism Product Cordoba for “Roman Lunch and Dinner”) . Besides this town takes part in different important routes a regional level as “Betica-Romana Route” and “Via Augusta Route”. My focus will be Iberian Settlement “Cerro de la Cruz” and the first level of Historical-Archeological Museum about Iberian Culture and the local agriculture, including ethnobotanic.
I will begin with Iberian Settlement (II-III C b.C). It is an example of the architectures and materials conserved in very good condition. It shows the urbanity of the time and the differentiation of the rooms destined to storages and factories craftsmen presenting work and habitat places (mills of flour, rain tanks, warehouses of amphoras, etc.). Due to a big number of archeological pieces, Almedinilla, created a Historical-Archeological Museum that is part of the Ecomuseum. It is divided in different rooms and topic. The first floor is dedicated to Iberiam Culture. In this room, it exhibits archeological objects find in the site (ceramic, pottery, weapons, a wheel of cart, grave goods, utensils, etc). Due to the important of the agriculture in this town, with the typical Mediterranean Triad (cereal, vide and olive trees), the museum has a “nature classroom”, ethnobotanic tour and a cultivate parcel where there are the principal variety of olive tree from this area, and an experimental garden to realize scholar activities. The museum is the starting point of some hiking trails. Besides, they use the agriculture and the ancient jobs connected with it (wheat flour milling, olive pressing, soap essences making, etc..) to realize activities in a “ Water Mill hall in an old flour mill” or “Restoration Workshop and warehouse”, for example. I will say that these activities are an instrument of participation and reflection on the present from past knowledge.
Of the union of Iberian and Roman Traditions (bulls and events) has emerged the construction in 2009 of a “Plaza de Toros” named the Coliseum, where besides to celebrate bullfighting shows, they organize concerts, plays, music festivals, etc.).
This shows as a town of 2.523 habitants it is known to restore and conserve its cultural heritage and convert it in an important opportunity of development, focusing all activities to cultural and rural tourism (ever more in demand by citizenry). In this case, the cultural heritage is a strong pillar of economic growth, creating new labour possibilities. According to Institute Statistic of Andalucía (October 2013) only the 6.9 % of population is unemployed, being the young people the least affected for this situation. These statistics in this moment in Spain are fantastic. Around these cultural activities were created another kind of business (restaurants, a hostel, small shops, rural houses, etc.)
To make this possible, in a small village located a 114 km of the capital (Córdoba) and surrounded by mountain, it is necessary the support of the different administrations, governments, associations, etc.. that have contributed with subsidies of EU and others institutions. The creation of a local enterprise that is the responsible to manage the touristic activities, guarantees the proper creation and management of this interesting project.
The most actives government institutions aside from the obvious Junta de Andalucía and the local County Administration are Diputación de Córdoba, Mancomunidad de la Subbética, C.I.T Subbética and a very active local-public enterprise called Somnus (majority of the activities from it). At the national level we have intervention of Ministerio Educación, Cultura y Deporte with Declaration of Cultural Heritage.
At the European Level we see the presence of: FEDER , European founds for regional development.
The support of the citizens is very important to the success of the different activities and event, the population participates actively in all activities. A lot of factors have been favorable to do this fast development possible. Government, enterprises, citizens work together to:
-Safeguarding patrimony assets to continue applying strategies to increase the economic benefits.
-Improving communication to be better (communicated) with other langer cities as Jaen or Granada and improving the local infrastructures to “modernize” the town (sport facilities, renovation of house, streets, parks, etc.)
- Being an active part in events and activities.
An example to follow…
